Samsung holds on to top spot in India's smartphone market
Despite increasing competition, Samsung has managed to maintain its position as the number one smartphone manufacturer in India, according to Counterpoint Research. The South Korean giant has 23.2 percent of the market share in the smartphone segment in Q3 2015, down slightly from 24.5 percent last quarter. In the mobile segment as a whole, the manufacturer has a 19.0 percent market share.
Samsung witnessed a healthy amount of sales in the mid-tier segment, bolstered by the launch of the Galaxy J5 and J7, and the continuing success of the Galaxy A series. However, the vendor does not have robust offerings in the budget segment, but with the launch of the Galaxy On5 and On7 yesterday, it is looking to rectify the issue. The phones — which come withMixRadio out of the box — are being marketed as media consumption devices, and retail for ₹8,990 ($135) and ₹10,990 ($165) respectively.
The research firm noted that smartphone shipments as a whole increased by 12 percent quarter-on-quarter and 20 percent when compared to Q3 2014, with one out of every three devices sold being smartphones. E-commerce sites such as Flipkart, Amazon and Snapdeal also contributed heavily to overall sales, with one out of three handsets purchased online.
With 4G networks slowly gaining momentum, Counterpoint found that one out of three of all smartphones sold during the quarter came equipped with 4G connectivity. The government's local manufacturing efforts are also starting to bear fruit, with 25 percent of all devices sold being made in the country under the "Make in India" initiative. Samsung already assembles a majority of phones sold in the country locally, and Xiaomi is now following suit with the Redmi 2 Prime. Sony is also said to be interested in setting up a facility in India in the near future.
