We all know that Android based smartphones are powerful devices that can keep you in touch with friends, family and with your business. But when you need a break from email, texting, surfing and working, download one or all of these free games and discover just how fun your Android smartphone can be.
1. Angry Birds
I've written a full review on Angry Birds for one primary reason: It deserves a full review. Angry Birds is one of the consistently most popular games for the iPhone and has quickly become an equally popular game for Android. The game is addictive, fun, challenging and family friendly. Basically, you launch birds using a giant slingshot into structures made of wood, ice and stone that protect a bunch of pigs. Why do pigs need protection and why in the world would birds want to attack them? Simple. The pigs stole all the eggs away from the birds, making them angry and seeking revenge.
Obviously not based in reality, which makes this game even better. Angry Birds is a great break from reality and from your busy day
2. Paper Toss
With a flick of your finger, toss a crumpled up piece of paper across a room and into a waste basket. Sounds fairly easy, right? Well, there happens to be a fan in the room, causing a rather troubling air current. To make the shot, you’ll need to accommodate for the wind, distance and distance.
Paper toss is a great time waster and have spawned more than a few challenges between friends. The game works great on my Droid, Droid Incredible and is even more enjoyable on the larger-screened Droid X.
You can choose from three different difficulty levels and between three locations. The game will keep track on your current score as well as you top score. Paper Toss is fun, family friendly and a "green alternative" to using real paper!
3. Live Holdem Poker
Facebook users will probably be familiar with the Facebook game of Texas Holdem Poker. The Android version uses your Facebook user name and password to connect you to live Texas Holdem Poker games where you can play against friends or strangers around the world. Holdem Poker will start you off with a few thousand free chips which, if your poker skills are like mine, won’t last you very long. But fear not, you can easily buy new poker dollars to get you back in the game.
Game play speed is based on your connection to the Internet and is much quicker when using a strong Wi-Fi connection. To get started, just sign in, go through a few set up steps, choose a table to play and let the gambling begin.
4. Jewels
Anyone that has played the classic game “Bejeweled,” can quickly tell you how addictive this puzzle game is. While “Jewels” is not exactly the same game, it plays just like “Bejeweled” and is available as a free download in the Android Market. The game is simple. Arrange identical jewels into rows of three or more. Once you get three identical jewels in a row, the will disintegrate, only to be replaced by another group of jewels.
The more identical jewels you can connect, the more points you earn. The object is simply to beat your high score. Take a quick look at the global high scores from the main screen to get an idea if you’re ready for the Jewels Olympic team. Okay, there is no Olympic team but Jewels is still fun and challenging.
5. Solitaire
Not all video games need to be exciting in order to be worthy of a download. Such is the case with the free Solitaire app by Ken Magic. I've downloaded a few different Solitaireapps and this one is the most stable, easy to use and has the most useful options.
This app has several options to choose from:
- Deal 3 or 1 card
- Play normal or Vegas style
- Option to play Spider Solitaire with 4,2 or 1 suit.
The play is smooth and easy and, most importantly, this app is rock solid. I've tested it on both my Droid and my Incredible and have never had a Force Stop issue.
For those who enjoy playing Solitaire, this app can easily change the way you play the game.
